The Bici-Boat preparation and departure

For almost 2 months, I have been preparing for the big day: a new beginning for a new adventure. As usual, I am going back on the saddle but this time, it will be on water and even the wildest and richest waters of the planet. The "Bici-Boat" is now ready and I just need to cast off. Tomorrow I am going to Pusono, a small village in the heart of the province of Tena. From there the Rio Pusuno will lead me to the Rio Napo, and I hope, later on in the Rio Amazona to Manaus.

No record has to be beaten and don't look for any special performance because I don't want to be in a rush or even try to impress anybody. I simply want to continue to live my life in a nomadic way while trying to make the most of a unique eco-system where there is still so much to learn. I'm leaving for, I think, a minimum of 5-6 months and I won't just cross the Amazon. I am looking forward to discover the small rivers and lagoons along the major rivers, sharing my day with people I meet and who live their lives simply and nobly in what is called the lungs of the world. To find an occupation during the trip and especially to invest myself in what fascinates me, I intend to film a documentary that will integrate the expedition itself of course, but especially the fauna, flora, human being, the environment and the balance between all these actors. While trying to take advantage of this "ecological" concept, I want to see with my own eyes, talk with others and share ideas, perspectives and cultures.

Since I left Quito by bike and reached Tena, time flew and the days have spun full speed. Patricio Crausaz, a Swiss-Ecuadorian banker-mountaineer (sounds complicated I know) gave me a lot of good ideas and contacts to organize the beginning of my preparations. I also met Gabriel, who is a local guide, who brought me in the little village of Pusunos where I met Marco Charihuaman, who is the master-builder and architect of the boat. Lizbeth, owner of the cafe la Tortuga and a compatriot, helped me in different ways, by cooking great meals of course but above all by furnishing me, with her friend Andrea, with various essential accessories. Thanks to Patricio and the Ministry of Environment of Ecuador, I found Nicasio Valle which offered me his help, the use of his workshop and his skills to build an efficient propulsion system and rudder.

Things are going as they should in Latin America, slowly but surely. Everything fits into one another and I focused my energy to my sponsor's research willing to support me: Thanks to the ideas and the valuable help of Nadine Crausaz in Switzerland, I came in contact with Jerome Christen of the Municipality of Vevey - the town where I came to this beautiful world - who decided to support me in this "little crazy" project but which makes so much sense to me. With Jerome Christen, Pierre and Corinne, I could not find a better partner. They gave me their full support and helped me to be and stay myself. My sister has done an incredible job also. She's been supporting me since the beginning, when I left Switzerland 5 years ago. Of course, my parents too: Without my whole family, I certainly would not be where I am. It's a bit ironic because for sure they would be happier to have me with them in Switzerland and me too, but the distance does nothing and the very strong relationship we have gives me the psychological strength and allows me to continue getting through so many experiences, which are sometimes extreme. I forget a lot of fabulous people who helped me, as well those who made donations and others who gave me a hand, but I will come back to them later on, when I will have another opportunity ( I'm going to write a novel as an introduction if I continue... so many people have struggled for me). I want to thank everyone from my hearth, all the actors who support me and help me because such a project cannot be exist without the help of "the others". Even if I will find myself alone for many months and that my survival will depend on me only, it's thanks to you all that is possible, THANK YOU!

I have thought a lot about what propulsion system to choose and Inventech, a australian consulting engineer, gave me a lot of very valuable advices. I finally opted for what seemed the simplest and most effective. A "second" chain in the gable of the rear wheel which turns a shaft, which is behind the wheel. 2 "wheels-turbins" give me an ideal propulsion, even enough to ascend the rivers, as long as the currents don't get too wild. Thanks to the good performance of the whole system, I will save a lot of energy and will have more time for what I want or need to do, according to needs, meetings, ideas. As long it was possible, I used the natural forest's resources but of course without harming it either. The boat is made of cedar, a very good wood and above all, a very light one. The entire project was assembled with the help of local artisans. A solar panel will provide the energy necessary for my energy needs for the documentary and photograph material (but this one is Japanese). It seems to me that obviously I have thought about everything but I know that when I willgive the first pedal stroke, I will remember what is missing. The first part will take me to Coca, that I should reach in 3-4 days. Coca, the last major town before Iquitos on the Rio Amazona, gives me the opportunity to make a first "real test" and I will be able to buy provisions and make the final adjustments before crossing the border and find myself on the peruvian Napo, very wild and isolated. After, and thanks to all my equipment, books and advices, I would be able to learn more intensely my new environment and try to live in the forest with respect and humility.

It's actually a very strange feeling for me who should be accustomed to important departures, as it's been happening for 5 years. But no one ever really gets used to leaving for the unknown and each time a little adrenaline takes you by the throat and remind you how you are small and insignificant while facing the nature and wild open spaces. Being on the Water in a Bici-Boat is also completly new to me and it adds a good dose of adrenaline (really nice but I would be nice to not feel it so strong the evening when trying to sleep). I know I will have to go through some rapids and probably the worst ones right at the beginning, before being able to have on hand on the Bici-Boat and find my new "routine".

These days have been busy with various local and national Equadorian's medias, tv, radio and newspapers and with the final preparations. I am pleasantly surprised by the way the local people react to the project. The people, like the ones I found in Africa in wild places, are a bit scared and don't necessarily know the ecosystem where they live in. Some of them hardly leave their town. Obviously they think I'm a bit crazy but I also receive a lot of sympathy. The idea of living in the Amazonian forest is fascinating and make them dream too. The concept of "ecology" is relatively new in Ecuador and here, right now, the main message is to learn to not throw litter and contaminate their eco-system. In Peru too but later in Brazil it will be different. Although it ss famous for its environmental problems in the Amazon, it became an active and effective partner in the global warming fight and reduces its pollution with heavy economic and social means.

I am always looking for a sponsor who would, with the city of Vevey, be the main sponsor and also with Meditec, who helps me too. A kind of stressful situation no to have all the money I need before leaving, but I hope to quickly find the last partner. The Murphey's law is part of the game as well, small problems like credit card limit, small power cable impossible to find, regional political problems that show up just in the last days before any major departure.

But to resume my current situation, it's just pure happiness! A dream wich came true. I had the chance to live so many dreams since I left to discover the world, nature and people while cycling, the opportunity to work 2 years as a safari guide in Namibia and now this crazy dream of crossing one of the most hostile environments on this fabulous and incredible planet while living on my bici-boat!

I will give some news in about a week in Coca and then whenever it will be possible and where I'll find a satellite internet connection. I send you all my best positive thoughts and vibes!

Ah, there it is, I think... yes, that's it: I am hearing the call of the forest, it is time for me to go...

Depuis près de 2 mois, je me prépare pour le grand jour: un nouveau départ pour une nouvelle aventure. Comme d'habitude, je remonte en selle mais cette fois-ci, cela sera l'eau et même sur les eaux les plus sauvages et riches de vie de la planète. Le "Bici-Boat" est désormais prêt et il ne me reste plus qu'à larguer les amarres. Demain, je pars pour Pusono, petit village au coeur de la province de Tena, d'où le fleuve Pusuno me ménera au fleuve Napo, puis je l'espère sur le fleuve Amazone et ceci jusqu'à Manaus..

Aucun record à battre et ne cherchez pas l'exploit sportif car je cherche simplement à continuer à vivre ma vie de nomade tout en essayant de profiter au maximum d'un éco-systeme unique et dont l'on a encore tant à apprendre. Je pars pour,je pense, un minimum de 5-6 mois et ne compte pas seulement traverser l'Amazonie. Je cherche plus à tenter de découvrir les petites rivières et lagons qui longent les grands fleuves, en partageant mon quotidien avec les gens que je rencontre et qui vivent leur vie simplement et noblement dans ce que l'on appelle, le poumon de la planète. Pour m'occuper et surtout pour m'investir dans ce qui me passionne, je compte réaliser un documentaire qui intégrera l'expédition bien sûr, mais surtout la faune, la flore, l'être humain, l'environnement et l'équilibre entre tous ces acteurs. Profiter de ce concept "écologique" pour voir de mes propres yeux, parler avec les autres et partager des idées, points de vue et cultures.

Depuis que j'ai quitté Quito à vélo et rejoint Tena, le temps a passé mais les journées ont filé à toute allure; Patricio Crausaz, un banquier-alpiniste suisse-équatorien (compliqué tout ça je sais) m'a donné de bonnes idées et contacts pour organiser le commencement de mes préparatifs. Je suis aussi tombé sur un guide, Gabriel, qui m'a conduit dans le petit village de Pusuno où j'ai rencontré Marco Charihuaman, le maître-constructeur du Bici-Boat. Lizbeth, du café la Tortuga, une compatriote, m'a aidé de différentes manières. Bien sûr comme bon restaurateur qui se respecte mais surtout en me fournissant, avec l'aide de son amie Andrea, divers accessoires indispensables. Grâce à Patricio et le ministère de l'environnement équatorien, j'ai rencontré Nicasio Valle qui m'a offert son aide, son atelier mécanique et son savoir-faire pour que l'on puisse mettre sur "pied" le système efficace de propulsion et du gouvernail.

Les choses se mettent en place comme il se doit en Amérique latine, gentillement mais sûrement. Tout s'emboîte l'un dans l'autre et je dois désormais concentrer mon énergie sur la recherche de partenaires pour me soutenir: Grâce aux idées et à l'aide précieuse de Nadine Crausaz en Suisse, je suis entré en contact avec Jérôme Christen de la Commune de Vevey, ville qui a décidé de me soutenir dans ce projet un peu fou mais tellement censé en meme temps. Avec Jérôme Christen, mais aussi Pierre et Corinne, je n'aurais pu trouver de meilleurs partenaires à Vevey pour me soutenir complétement et m'aider à rester moi-même. Ma soeur a fait un travail incroyable et m'a d'ailleurs supporté et aidé depuis que je suis parti, il y a 5 ans déjà, comme mes parents aussi. Sans eux, je ne serai certainement pas où je suis. C'est un peu ironique car ils seraient plus heureux de m'avoir à leurs côtés et moi aussi, mais la distance n'affecte rien et ces liens très forts avec eux me donnent la force psychologique de vouloir et pouvoir continuer à traverser tant d'épreuves, parfois extrêmes. J'oublie pleins de personnes fabuleuses qui m'ont aidées, comme ceux qui ont fait des dons et les autres qui m'ont donné un coup de main, mais je reviendrai sur celles-ci plus tard, quand l'occasion se représentera (je vais devoir écrire un roman comme introduction sinon...tant de personnes se sont démenées pour moi!). Je veux simplement remercier de tout mon coeur toutes les personnes, tous les acteurs qui me soutiennent et m'aident, car un projet de ce genre ne se réalise bien sûr qu'avec l'aide des autres. Même si je vais me retrouver seul de nombreux mois et que ma survie ne dépendra que de moi, c'est bien grâce à vous tous que tout cela est possible, MERCI!

J'ai longuement pensé au système de propulsion et Inventech, un bureau d'ingénieurs en Australie m'a donne des conseils extrêmement précieux. J'ai finalement opté pour ce qui me paraissait le plus simple et le plus efficace. Une "deuxième" chaîne au pignon de la roue arrière qui tourne un axe qui se trouve derrière la roue. 2 "roues-hélices" me donnent une propulsion idéale, même suffisante pour remonter les rivières, tant que les courants ne se déchainent pas. Toute la realisation du projet, meme si j'ai beaucoup donné d'énergie et de temps, s'est faite

automatiquement, au gré des besoins, des rencontres, des idées. Quand c'était possible, j'ai utilisé les ressources naturelles de la forêt, sans évidemment la nuir. Le bateau est fait en cèdre, un très bon bois et surtout très léger. Tout le projet a été réalisé avec les artisants locaux. Un panneau solaire donnera l'énergie necessaire pour mes besoins énergétiques dûs au documentaire et photos (par contre, ce matériel-là est japonais).

Il me semble avoir pensé à tout mais je sais que dès que je donnerai le premier coup de pédale, je me rappellerai de tout ce que j'ai encore oublié. La première partie me ménera à Coca, que je devrais atteindre en 3-4 jours. Coca, dernière grande ville avant Iquitos sur le fleuve Amazone, me donnera l'opportunité de faire un premier "test" réel, de me ressourcer et de pouvoir faire les derniers ajustements avant de traverser la frontière et me retrouver sur le Napo péruvien, très sauvage et isolé. Après - et grâce à tout mon matériel, livres et conseils - je pourrai plus tranquillement apprendre à découvrir intensément mon nouvel élément et essayer de vivre de la forêt, avec respect et humilité.

C'est en fait une sensation très bizarre pour moi qui devrais être habitué aux grands départs, comme cela m'arrive depuis 5 ans. Mais l'on ne s'habitue jamais vraiment à partir à l'inconnu et chaque fois, un petit pincement vous saisi à la gorge et vous rappelle combien l'on est petit et insignifiant face à la nature et des grands espaces sauvages. Le fait de partir sur l'eau et en bici-boat est aussi bien sûr complétement nouveau pour moi et rajoute une bonne dose d'adrénaline, très agréable mais dont je me passerais bien le soir avant d'essayer de m'endormir. Je sais qu'il va me falloir passer les premiers rapides, voire même les plus dangereux, en tout début de parcours, avant même de pouvoir avoir bien en main le bici-boat.

Ces derniers jours, j'ai été bien occupé avec les divers médias locaux et nationaux équtoriens, tv, radio et journaux, et aux derniers préparatifs. Je suis agréablement surpris par l'accueil du projet par les locaux, qui, comme je l'ai remarqué en Afrique, ont peur et ne connaissent pas forcément bien la nature qui les entoure. Je passe évidemment un peu pour un fou mais à qui l'on donne beaucoup de sympathie et dont l'idée de vivre dans la forêt amazonienne fait également rêver et fascine. Le concept "écologique" est relativement nouveau en Equateur et ici, en ce moment, le message principal est d'apprendre à chacun de ne pas jeter les détritus dans la nature et d'éviter de polluer leur écosystème. Au Pérou, meme combat, mais par contre plus tard au Brésil cela sera différent. Même si le Brésil est plus tristement célèbre pour ses problèmes environnementaux en Amazonie, il est devenu un partenair actif et efficace dans la lutte contre le réchauffement climatique et réduit la pollution avec de gros moyens économiques et sociaux.

Je suis toujours en quête d'un sponsor qui aimerait s'aligner avec Vevey comme sponsor principal et également avec Meditec, qui m'aide aussi. Une situation un peu stressante de n'avoir pas tous les fonds avant de partir, mais j'espère trouver rapidement ce dernier partenaire. Un grand classique, c'est évidemment aussi tout les petits problèmes genre carte de crédit, petit câble électrique introuvable et autres problèmes politiques régionaux qui surviennent les derniers jours avant tout grand départ.

Mais pour réaliser ma situation actuelle, ce n'est que du bonheur pur! Un rêve qui se réalise. Tant de rêves vécus depuis que je suis parti à la découverte du monde, de la nature et des gens en vélo. La chance de travailler 2 ans comme guide de safari en Namibie et maintenant ce rêve fou de traverser un des environnements les plus hostiles mais des plus incroyables de cette fabuleuse planète, ceci en vivant sur mon bici-boat!

Je donnerai de mes nouvelles d'ici environ une semaine à Coca et par la suite donnerai de mes nouvelles quand cela sera possible et quand je trouverai une connection internet-satellite. Je vous envoie toutes mes meilleures pensées positives et vous souhaite tout le meilleur!
