The Bici-Boat and the Expedition

A traditional boat usually called "launcha" is under construction. A Launcha is the typical transport used in Amazonia (see photo): fine, long and fast when it is equipped with an engine. This is the perfect boat to cross the Amazon with. Perfect for the calm water of the Amazona but as well for the exploration of lagoons and the small rapids. Obviously, with the elevation of the bicycle and the concept of a floating home for many months to come, a “a la carte” boat is essential. A little wider than normal, this launcha will ensure a better balance and a roof adapted for the view on the saddle.

Propulsion

The propulsion system is ingenious but simple. Fixed to the rear wheel, an additional chain who will turn a big axis, who will link the 2 wheels (which are located on each side of the boat, in the water). At the rear, like traditional boats, an adequate rudder will be installed.

Dimensions

The vessel will measure 7 meters long, 1.10 meters wide and 65 centimeters high and build in cedar’s wood. It will be great for shallow lagoons as the swift waters of the Napo and is the ideal companion for pedaling on the Rio Amazona, sleeping in my hammock or cooking in the front.

Shelter

A roof with 2 different levels will be designed: in the middle - relatively low for the hammock and living space - and in the back, higher for a good view from the saddle of the bike when I am pedaling. It will be made in natural material (like a thatched roof), perfectly waterproof against the incessant rains.

Energy Production

For the documentary, different batteries have to be recharge constantly so that a solar panel is needed.

Key element

Obviously the bike itself is none other than my good Lucie, who accompanied me since the beginning of my journey.

Food

Food is obviously an important factor for the success of this project and my survival. I will try to live as much as possible with fishing and gathering. I'm taking with me a reserve of non-perishable food; to ameliorate the daily menus but especially in times of food shortage.

Water

Water will be provided by the river. A active carbon filter Katadyn will allow me to purify its water and will be perfectly healthy and drinkable.

Health

The pharmacy will also be abundant. Sufficient Malarone to counter possible attacks of malaria, antibiotics for bacterial infections or diseases and other drugs will be needed to deal with different risks of infections, illness or accidents.

You may support this expedition. All kind of amount will be very helpful and will be used ONLY for the documentary project itself. Thank you very much!
